The energy transition, and particularly the rollout of new fuels, demands courage, innovation, and collaboration—both on the production and consumption side. On behalf of Statkraft, a Norwegian energy company, and Europe’s largest producer of renewable energy, we explored the market opportunities for green hydrogen in the maritime sector.
Leveraging our extensive network and sector expertise, we mapped out which maritime market segments offer the greatest potential for hydrogen adoption, where the biggest impact can be achieved, how this aligns with the client’s production ambitions, and which shipowners might be interested.
Our Approach
A combination of desk research, conversations with various (inter)national stakeholders, and a deep dive into different maritime subsectors and their frontrunners. We examined technological developments, national and international regulations, infrastructure availability, and current pilot projects. The focus was on connecting parties eager to experiment and scale up, with the goal of accelerating hydrogen adoption in shipping, ports, and offshore operations.
The Result
A clear overview of hydrogen developments within the maritime sector in the Netherlands, identification of the most promising segments—including timelines, concrete examples of (potentially) iconic projects to contribute to and build a position in—and a longlist of potential partners. Plus, recommendations for next steps.
This way, we contribute to a sustainable, competitive, and future-proof maritime sector—and help both our client and the industry take the next step toward zero-emission shipping.
