Circular opportunities for maritime: in conversation Marja van Bijsterveldt
On June 21, we discussed ‘Circular maritime opportunities’ with special representative Marja van Bijsterveldt, the Sector Agenda team and Young Netherlands Maritime Technology (NMT). An open and energetic conversation about challenges, but especially opportunities and the ambition to put the Netherlands back on the world map as an innovative maritime nation.
Marja van Bijsterveldt established the sector agenda in an action-oriented manner, thinking in terms of solutions and opportunities. We completely agreed: we are only satisfied when things are moving forward. We are happy to support each other on this important mission!
Together with the young professionals, who are fully engaged in a sustainable maritime future and the innovative power of our sector. Good to hear the practical ideas they have about circularity and what it means for them.

About the sector agenda
To capitalize the maritime manufacturing industry opportunities and tackle threats, the government and the sector joined forces to jointly create a sector agenda. Minister Micky Adriaansens (Ministery of Economic Affairs and Climate) asked Marja van Bijsterveldt-Vliegenthart to manage this extensive process as a representative.
The current geopolitical situation and the impact of climate change pose a number of urgent social challenges. How do we secure our vital infrastructure in the North Sea? How do we ensure dry feet? How do we optimally use sustainability from an economic perspective?
The maritime industry plays an essential and strategic role here. The importance of a more active industrial policy for our country is supported both by the coalition agreement and in various motions of the House of Representatives. This formed the basis of the assignment of Marja van Bijsterveldt, who, as representative for the maritime manufacturing industry, had an important role in the creation of the sector agenda that forms the foundation for this. She fulfilled this role until October 2023 in addition to her regular work as mayor of the municipality of Delft.
